Part of the reason the Mercedes and Audi brands carry such prestige is because of the S-Class and A8. The idea of the CLA and A3 is that you're buying something with the same badge and design language as the cars that the Bundesprasident could be chauffeured around in. Without an appropriate halo model at the top, there's a limit to how far downward Cadillac can stretch without losing credibility.

Wrong direction. If you want the ATS to sell, you have to punch upward. Make each lower trim model as good as the highest european luxury sedan. Cut into the margins a bit if you have to. Rebadging an Malibu isn't going to fix the problem of people not thinking the ATS is good enough.

Obviously you would localize it. And the Beast isn't an effective halo car because there's nothing like it in any Cadillac showroom and you have to wait for the President to come to town to ever see one on the street. Also, Merkel would be the chancellor, not the president.
